Common Signs of a Learning Disability

Diagnosing a learning disability can be a very challenging task. There are no physical signs that a person has a learning disability. When determining if a learning disability is an issue with your child, you must take many things into consideration. However, the first thing that you should understand is that a learning disability is not like a physical disability. You are able to physically tell is a person has a disability like blindness, or one that restricts movement, but with a learning disability, you are not able to tell that a person has one by simply looking at them.

It is important for parents and teachers alike to pay attention to details regarding a child’s comprehension of certain things. Many times, if a certain skill or concept is not learned by the “standard” time in a child’s life, this will raise the awareness that there may be a possible learning disorder. You should learn the details of skills and concepts that children by learn by a certain age. This will ensure that you will know if your child is not learning the skills and concept as they should. However, you should keep in mind that the skills that a child is expected to learn by a certain age is simply an average standard. Your child may learn skills sooner or later than the average standard, and this should not result in cause for concern when it comes to learning disabilities.

If you find that you are concerned as to if your child has a learning disability or not, there are a couple of things that you should take into consideration. One of the first things that you should do to rule out any other possibilities apart from a learning disability is to have the child’s eyesight tested. Many times, a child may not have the eyesight that is required to perform tasks successfully. If you have your child’s vision tested, and the results show that the eyesight is fine, you may want to have a hearing test performed on the child. This, too, can result in a child not comprehending things as they should.

If you find that your child has issues sitting still and listening to instructions appropriately, your child may be exhibiting signs of a learning disability. If a child has a high level of energy, cannot seem to sit still, and is unable to focus on one task at a time and see it through to completion, this could be a sign that your child has a learning disability. If your child exhibits these signs, you should consult the child’s doctor. They will place your child through a series of tests in order to determine if a learning disability is the cause of such issues.

There are many signs that your child may be experiencing a learning disability. If you find that your child has any symptoms of experiencing a learning disability, it is important to have them properly evaluated as soon as possible.
